Well, today has felt jam-packed! Figuring out how to start this blog is proving to be rather difficult... so who knows where today's update could end up. Today has just felt like it's had a bit of everything - a radio appearance, a county change, a crowd of new walkers, and the last of the 16 mile days - so safe to say, it's been a full one!
To start at the very beginning though, (cue Julie Andrews), the day kicked off with Jon, live on BBC Radio Devon. It was a bit strange, albeit in a good way, hearing a member of the team talking on the radio, but what a cool experience! I have to say Jon, you did a great job, and hearing all the different reasons behind why we're doing Land's End to Cranbrook was so refreshing and certainly a mood booster to start the day.
We also officially started walking the Devon coastal path today, starting what is slowly feeling like the 'home-stretch' of this crazy adventure. Not only that, but it was also the last 16-miler of the walk! - something the boys are very happy about, might I add...!
To go into specifics though, we started the day at Plymouth Mount Batten where we were greeted by the most amazing team - Cranbrook Church! Going from having 2 walkers, to 8 was such a big change but in the most amazing way. Having so many familiar faces join us gave us such a boost, making the day feel much more like a community outing than just another long walk.
Our first aid station was at Wembury Two Moors Car Park, where the support team eagerly spotted an array of fluorescent, lime green mini people walking around the coastline in the far distance. It wasn't long though before they made their way across the bay to the car park - although I'm pretty sure the smell of Bev's bacon sarnies was enough to get the noses twitching!
Before a quick refuel, the team made their way towards the River Yealm ferry crossing which gave everyone a chance to rest their legs and enjoy something different. We're starting to realise that these ferry rides are proving to be nearly everyone's highlight of the day!
By the time we hit Warren Car Park, everyone was certainly ready for some lunch, so we all sat on the coastal path to quickly regain some energy - of which Laura's cookie bars certainly did the rounds. It's safe to say Lau, that they were the highlight of a lot of people's day!!
From there, the team pushed onto the finish line at Mothecombe, despite the team consistently asking "are we there yet" for the last mile... I think that last mile may have started to feel a bit like 3! That being said, we couldn't be prouder of the entire team that joined today to walk Jon & Jac home to Cranbrook - it certainly was the absolute best way to start the Devon part of this walk - so THANK YOU to everyone who joined... you're all amazing!
We couldn't finish the day without bundling into the pub at Mothecombe Car Park for a debrief and a drink... a perfect time to appreciate everything everyone achieved today around, what I must say, was a lovely outdoor log burner! It was a simple. but perfect, way to round up a long day - it started with community and ended with community - THIS is what we're doing this for.
The four of us our now back at our (new) lodgings in Stoke Gabriel - at the lovely Chris and Tina's house - enjoying a fabulous Adam Spicer chicken curry - what a star he is! This evening has just been filled with joy, laughter, great reflections from today and great food. For me, it's these moments that I am going to remember most from this experience I think - these incredible evenings that really bring this whole experience together - even if Jon might feel like he's on a Youth trip!!
So we're another step closer to reaching home... another 16.4 miles, 809m of ascent and 40,962 steps, to be exact.
